World Cup Final Decided on Penalty Shots
The Womens World Cup just wrapped up this past Sunday with Japan posting a stunning victory over the USA. Tied going into extra time, the USA scored first - with just 1 minute left in the first extra time period - to go up 2-1. But, because World Cup rules state that both halves have to be played, the Japanese rallied to tie it with just a few minutes left in the second over time period. The teams went to penalty shots - Japan scoring first. The USA were stopped twice by the Japanese goalie, who made the save of the tournament, diving to one side and saving the ball with her outstretched foot. They also sailed a shot over the crossbar. In the end, Japan, the first Asian team to ever win a World Cup, came away with the victory. Congratulations Japan!
